Apple relents, will provide SDK to develop native applications for the iPhone
After persistent pressure from developers, Apple promises an SDK for the iPhone by February 2008.
Finally agreeing that writing Safari-based AJAX applications is not going to cut it with the iPhone community, Apple has agreed to provide an SDK for developers to write native third-party applications for the device. In a letter on Apple's Web site, Steve Jobs writes that "we are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users." At the same time, he cites concerns (echoed by Nokia with regard to their own phones) that "as phones become more powerful, [viruses and malware] will become more dangerous, and since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target." Jobs also noted that the SDK will also let developers build applications for the new iPod Touch.
